Make Memories This Mother’s Day

As Mother’s Day approaches, it reminds us that at the heart of the mother–child relationship is time—time to connect, to bond, and to create the love and memories we carry with us.

One beautiful way to nurture that connection is by creating something together. Passing on skills through craft is more than just learning… it’s about shared time, hands working side by side, and stories told as stitches are made. Something handmade, especially when made together, becomes an act of love—deeply personal and impossible to buy.

So this Mother’s Day, why not slow down and make something with your mum or your children? Craft together, laugh, talk, and let the making become the memory.

Project ideas to get you started:

  1. Knit or crochet accessories – Scarves, beanies, or even simple squares are great starting points. These suit any skill level and are easy to customise.

  2. French knitting– A fun, accessible entry point for younger children to get into the rhythm of yarn crafts. Find wooden knitting Nancies here.

  3. Skill swap with your mum – If your mum or nan knows a technique you’ve never learned, ask her to show you. Shared knowledge is a beautiful gift.

  4. Make pom-poms – Then turn them into playful characters for little ones to enjoy. Not sure where to start? Find affordable kits here.

  5. For the very little ones, crafting might not be on the cards just yet—but they can still be involved. Give them the sensory joy of yarn: let them play with a soft ball of wool, feel the texture on their skin, or even smell the fibres. These early experiences are more than cute—they’re the beginning of their connection to making, to you, and to the memories being formed around them.

Crafting doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Another lovely way to connect across generations is by giving new life to what’s already in your home. Upcycling is creative, meaningful, and often full of family history, whether it’s repurposing old clothes or stitching new stories into worn-out pieces.

Upcycling ideas to explore together:

  1. Decorate a pillowcase – Let young kids use fabric or acrylic paint to design their own pillowcase. I still use one I painted as a child! (If using acrylics, once dry, set the colour with a warm iron and paper towel before washing.)

  2. Sew on fun patches – Older kids can stitch patches onto stained or worn clothing. Use old fabric to cut out flowers, animals, or characters—let creativity lead. These sewing kits have everything you need to get started.

  3. Reimagine family clothing – Take worn-out clothes and turn them into a quilt, cushion cover, or tote bag. It’s a lovely way to preserve memories.

  4. Make T-shirt yarn – Cut old cotton tees into strips to create chunky yarn. Then crochet, knit or weave baskets, rugs, or market totes—functional and fun.

  5. Embroider old clothing – Add flair to jackets, shirts, or jeans with simple embroidery. Try meaningful symbols, florals, or initials for a personal touch. Find basic embroidery supplies here.
